A Doomed Queen’s Slippers Worth $57,000

A fashion collector shelled out more than USD 57,000 to own Marie Antoinette’s delicate slip-on shoes. This 6.5 size mules, was allegedly worn by the Queen of France at the Fête de la Fédération on July 14, 1790, two years before her execution. Originally they were a white/cream color with white silk and patriotic tricolor ribbons.

Marie’s mules are the most recent example of possessions that have been auctioned off whose former owners were iconic royals or celebrities. 

Marie Antoinette is one of history’s most iconic royalties known for her marriage to Louis XVI at the age of 14 and her reputable lavish lifestyle - notorious escapades such as sleigh racing, opera balls, hunting in the Bois de Boulogne, and gambling. According to scholars Marie Antoinette’s prodigality was so extreme, that it fuelled popular discontent and started the French Revolution! She was subjected to a mock trial for treason and subsequently executed by guillotine.
